A Tutorial On Importance of Project Management Methodologies

Just like any science, project management utilizes different models and methodologies. Methodologies are the theoretical frameworks that dictate how a certain process will be undertaken.

In this article, we will examine how different methodologies in project management work and how these methodologies are integrated within project management tools. Some of these methodologies such as the Kanban method work best as tools within a larger platform in the form of a software.

Importance of Project Management Methodologies

Projects require different approaches and there cannot be any one universal approach or methodology to all projects.

For example, a task in the office may be defined as a project depending on the scope, but this is undoubtedly different to a construction project which might require external staff, skills and sectors to finalize.

Therefore, standardization in project management is not the norm, and these different project methodologies or models, help in streamlining processes in project management by making it clear from the start which processes will ensue.

Furthermore, these methodologies help to create a common understanding between different organizations undertaking a similar project, or engaging in the same industry.

Overall, these methodologies are crucial in creating standardized rules of engagement and industry regulations which are important in dictating contractual obligations between parties.

Prevalent Project Management Methodologies

There is no defined number of project management methodologies as many more are coming up globally. However, the following are the most prevalent.

Kanban Method

This is the model used in project management tools such as Trello. It features a board with columns based on the status of a task, event or process.

Each column has sticky notes and therefore this method can work both digitally or physically where all participants are physically present in a room, facing a presenter.

Waterfall Model

The waterfall model features a project planning process from top to bottom in one setup. The project is broken down into smaller phases featuring seven distinct processes which are increase in complexity.

Six Sigma

The six sigma method was made popular by General Electric, which cited the methodology as one of the key factors influencing the company’s tremendous growth and performance. It features precision in the use of statistical models to improve operational and management processes.

Agile

As the name suggests the Agile method is versatile in its approach of breaking down different individual software project management-tools modules. Each process features various iterations which develop independently to form one product.

Rapid Application Development

The RAD methodology is mainly used in software development and its primary purpose is to ensure effectiveness and high quality in software development. It is divided into four phases.

In essence, there is no single methodology that can work in all project. Project managers use a variety of processes from several methodologies to ensure success of the overall project.

However, some managers may choose to stick to one model to the exclusion of all others. Whichever methodology you may decide to choose, it is important to remember that it is not the methodology that makes a project successful but rather the sum of resources and personnel in charge.
