What It Takes to Be a Successful Marketer – The Skills You Need

When setting your sights on the ideal career path there are a number of things that will enter your mind. Questions such as how in-demand the position is at the moment if there is room for growth in the future if the salary is what you’d be happy with, what kind of training and education you’d need to work in the field, and of course, if it plays to your natural skills and talents. It’s a whole lot to think about, but using such a critical eye can help ensure you pick the right career for you.

If you are currently eyeing a career in marketing, then there’s no doubt you’re well aware of just how exciting this field can be.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) even has the position of marketing managers listed as growing “faster than average”, which points to plenty of job opportunities in your ideal field. But just because there are jobs available, it doesn’t automatically mean you will land them.

Curious as to what it takes to be a successful marketer and really forge a path in the industry? Here are some of the skills and qualifications you’ll need in order to set yourself up for a rewarding career.

Start with the Foundation – Get a Degree in Marketing

Online Masters of Engineering Degree

First things first, you want to be sure that you have your foundation – the basics of marketing completely mastered. The best way to do that is to enrol in a marketing degree program.

Now if you want to better your odds of landing a job quickly after graduation, and even demand a higher salary, it makes sense to specialize in one particular area.

Take, for example, the field of marketing metrics, which relies on data collection and analytics. For this particular route, you could enrol in a program such as the masters in digital marketing and data analytics.

The idea behind this program is that you take a more progressive and more modern approach to marketing. And as you might assume, there is a heavy reliance on computer data.

Why digital analytics is so important? As this in-depth blog from Emerson University points out, it’s actually one of the top five skills that employers are looking for. You’d be looking at such trends as:

  • How product videos can impact sales and how video compares to written marketing and advertising
  • How customers are performing product searches, do they keep a particular brand in mind
  • The use of branded hashtags on social networks
  • How customers are using online customer support through social media channels

Your degree program is so much more than just reading textbooks and completing assignments, it’s truly preparing you for the outside world and how to ensure you feed the skills that will be useful.

Communication Skills Need to Be Well-Developed

Communication Skills Need to Be Well-Developed

One of the most important skills that employers are looking for when it comes to marketers are people who have well-developed communication skills. This means you aren’t still working on them; you have actually developed them to a high level of efficiency at this point.

Your degree or schooling would certainly help in giving you the confidence to communicate well, but at the same time, practice makes perfect.

So, which communication skills in particular are employers looking for?

  1. Need excellent written communication skills in order to craft clear messaging
  2. You need to be an excellent listener so you can absorb and understand what your client wants, as well as communicate with your boss and co-workers
  3. Speak well and communicate your thoughts and ideas clearly so others can understand

While much of these skills will come naturally to you, there is a certain degree of learning involved too. Your communication skills are like a muscle so the more you work them and use them, the stronger they will get. If you start to ignore them, then they aren’t as effective.

Marketing is a Team Event

Then there is the fact that you will likely be working with a team, which means marketing isn’t a solo field. Whether it is just the client you are conversing with or you have other co-workers and your supervisor involved, marketing tends to be a team event.

This is where your communication skills can be drawn upon, making it possible to keep everyone on the same page where expectations, results, and practices are involved.

Creative Thinking is the Driving Force Behind Campaigns

Creative Thinking

For every successful marketing plan out there, there has been someone that used creativity to get to that point of success. Creative thinking skills are another essential skill you’re going to need to make it big in the field of marketing.

Rather than being that “no” person, you need to be the “yes” person who is willing to try a variety of approaches and think outside the box.

So, what should you do if it feels your creativity has hit a slump? Try these exercises to get the creative juices flowing once again.

Look for inspiration that will help guide you and your decision-making process

  • Start making lists of your ideas as they occur
  • Go ahead and take a break away from the computer and away from your work
  • Try to do at least one creative activity each day to keep your brain sharp
  • Make sure you’re using the best facts and information
  • Bounce ideas off co-workers and collaborate together
  • Figure out what your most creative time of the day is and work during that time

Whether you’re picking just one of these techniques or using them all, each one can help to spark creativity in the workplace.

The Road to Becoming a Successful Marketer

Keep in mind that the road to becoming successful in your chosen career path, no matter what that career is, requires hard work, patience, and time. It doesn’t happen overnight, so you need to be putting in the work.
