Quora: What It Is & How to Use It

What if time stopped suddenly for five seconds?

Well, there would be no way to tell if time had even stopped because seconds are a measurement of time and, if time had stopped, how would we measure it?

The question and answer above are a perfect example of why Quora is such a good platform. A quick search on the web can never truly answer our most obscure and strange questions.

What is Quora?

More than just a question and answer forum, Quora is an entire online community of 300 million monthly users with a focus on sharing wisdom and knowledge. On the site, users can submit questions to the community that anyone can answer. The best answers are shown first as users can upvote and downvote comments.

User Profiles

Questions and answers you submit on the site will be displayed on your Quora profile. With enough upvoted questions and answers, you might start gaining some followers on your profile.

Before submitting questions and answers however, we recommend checking out established Quora users such as Kris Duggan’s profile for inspiration on what to add to your own profile.

Creating an account on Quora is pretty straightforward, and you can use either your email, Google, or Facebook account to instantly create an account and sign in.

After creating your account, you’ll be asked to select five different topics that interest you. Be sincere here, as your selections will affect your feed when browsing Quora. Fortunately there are many topics to choose from, including Movies, Technology, Food, Business, Science, Music, and Sports.

On your actual profile page, it’s important to include a brief description and include any credentials you have. Many users will look to see who actually answered their question, and sharing your education and experience will increase your credibility on the site.

After you’re happy with your profile, it’s time to start asking some questions.

Submitting Questions

Asking questions on Quora is a fantastic way to connect with new people and get a thought-out answer to your question.

A good tip is to only ask questions that a simple web search can’t answer because you may get some flack if you ask questions with straightforward answers. Questions that resemble homework problems are especially unwelcome. In this post, a student asked for answers on a programming assignment, and only received prank comments.

The best types of questions on Quora are questions that enable a wide variety of responses based on the contributors’ unique life experiences. A great example of a question asked on Quora recently was, “What are some ways to start a business?”.

While it may seem like a fairly straightforward and even boring question, there is no one correct answer. The answers to this question all differed as people shared their own perspectives about starting a business.

If you don’t want a question to be displayed on your profile, you can ask it anonymously. However, you won’t be able to collect those valuable upvotes that boost your profile rankings.

Submitting Answers

At the top of Quora’s homepage, you can click an icon labeled “Answer.” This will redirect you to a page with new questions asked by various people using the platform.

These questions will pertain to the topics you selected when making your account, and they will be based on previous questions you answered (if applicable).

After finding a question that you can answer, simply click on it and begin typing up your comment. Don’t get down if your answers don’t get a lot of likes at first; it takes consistency and patience to build credibility on the site.

Tip: To get noticed, only answer questions that have at least 100 followers. Also, consider how you format your responses. People will skip right over a big paragraph and head toward the easier-to-digest broken-up paragraphs.

Remember that people use Quora to get an answer from a real human, so don’t be afraid to share your experiences and provide further insight.
